According to a report on supply chain component shipments, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the highest-producing model among those released in 2024, with the total iPhone 16 series production estimated at 90.1 million units. Pro iPhones have become the most sought-after choice for consumers, and Apple is ready to continue this trend.
TheElec reports that the supply chain currently anticipates the following production allocation for the iPhone 16 series: iPhone 16 base model at 24.5 million units, Plus at 5.8 million units, Pro at 26.6 million units, and Pro Max at 33.2 million units. This means that in terms of percentages, iPhone 16 shipments will account for 27%, Pro Max for 37%, Pro for 30%, and iPhone 16 Plus for a mere 6%. Pro models will account for 67% of total production, exceeding the ratio observed in September 2023 between the combined display order mix for Pro and Pro Max models and the standard iPhone 15 generation. In August 2023, the ratio for Pro models compared to standard versions was close to 60%.
Apple's tilt towards Pro models reflects the company's confidence in the high-end market. Pro models, generally equipped with more advanced cameras, powerful processors, and increased storage, make them more appealing to consumers. The Pro Max, as the flagship of the Pro line, further reinforces its position as a consumer favorite with its larger screen, enhanced battery life, and more advanced camera system.
In addition to increased production, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will feature new camera technology. The periscope lens for iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max has reportedly begun shipping from LG Innoteck to assembly partners. Both Pro models are expected to be equipped with this component, boosting the telephoto zoom capability from 3x to 5x on both models.
With the introduction of the periscope lens, both iPhone 16 Pro models are anticipated to see a jump in their ultra-wide lens to 48MP. Non-Pro models will see aperture improvements for better low-light shooting, support for macro photography, and a vertical arrangement for spatial video recording. Additionally, a "capture" button is being discussed, making it easier for consumers to use their smartphones for photography.
These upgrades will further enhance the appeal of the Pro models, allowing them to stand out in the fiercely competitive smartphone market. Apple's focus on Pro models indicates the company's commitment to maintaining its dominance in the high-end market. With the iPhone 16 Pro Max being the highest-producing model, it is expected to be one of the most sought-after smartphones in the 2024 market.
