OmniVision Unveils New 50MP Mobile Image Sensor OV50M40, Featuring Video HDR and Low-Power Always-On Mode
OmniVision today announced the launch of its 1/2.88-inch 50MP mobile image sensor OV50M40, designed to power diverse smartphone camera applications with video HDR capabilities. This versatile 0.61m pixel-sized CMOS image sensor boasts 50-megapixel output and integrates a multitude of advanced features, including single-exposure dual-analog gain (DAG) video HDR and low-power always-on mode.
Suitable for smartphone front, wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto cameras, the OV50M40 supports interleaved HDR and DAGHDR technologies. Interleaved HDR effectively expands dynamic range, enhancing video and still image capture quality. The built-in DAG enables single-exposure HDR support, effectively minimizing motion artifacts under harsh lighting conditions.
To elevate image quality, the OV50M40 incorporates 4-in-1 pixel binning technology along with noise reduction techniques while supporting high-gain mode. In 4-in-1 pixel binning resolution, the OV50M40 achieves an impressive 64x analog gain. Moreover, the image sensor supports phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) for both pixel binning and full resolution modes, utilizing a hardware pixel-reconstruction algorithm on the platform.
The OV50M40 supports an always-on function for motion detection, touted as "ultra-low power." This sensor enables continuous image capture through rear or front cameras and facilitates 2x or 3x crop zoom for telephoto cameras via fast mode switching.
The OV50M40 supports a variety of resolutions and frame rates, including:
- 50MP (PDAF Auto Focus, 12fps)
- 12.5MP (PDAF Auto Focus, 60fps)
- 4K/2K Video (PDAF Auto Focus, 60fps)
- 1080p Video (120fps)
Furthermore, the OV50M40 utilizes a 1/2.88-inch optical format, supports CPHY/DPHYMIPI interfaces, and incorporates dual DOVDD (1.8/1.2V).
According to the official announcement from OmniVision, the OV50M40 will be available for sampling in the third quarter of 2024, with mass production planned for the fourth quarter of 2024.
The launch of the OV50M40 marks another significant milestone for OmniVision in the mobile image sensor arena. This new image sensor not only delivers enhanced clarity and detail in image and video capture for smartphone users but also caters to the demand for low power consumption and high frame rates. With the upcoming mass production of the OV50M40, it's anticipated to usher in a new era for the smartphone industry, further propelling the advancement of mobile imaging technology.
