Transsion Joins the Tri-Fold Phone Race: Phantom Ultimate 2 Concept Debuts at IFA 2024
Following the buzz surrounding Huawei's impending launch of the world's first tri-fold phone and Xiaomi's rumored development of a similar device, Chinese tech company Transsion (TECNO) has officially entered the tri-fold smartphone arena. At the recent IFA 2024 event in Berlin, Germany, Transsion showcased its Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-fold concept phone.
What sets the Phantom Ultimate 2 apart is its impressive engineering design, achieving a remarkably thin profile of just 11mm when folded, slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6's 12.1mm. Transsion claims they have achieved this slimness through a novel hinge design, reducing the thickness to 9mm. They also employed the "thinnest battery cover in the smartphone industry" measuring just 0.25mm, crafted from "ultra-compressed Titan advanced fiber material."
The Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts a 6.48-inch main display, which unfolds to reveal a 10-inch internal display, powered by a 3K OLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio. In its unfolded state, the Phantom Ultimate 2 resembles an Android tablet.
Importantly, the Phantom Ultimate 2 doesn't only offer simple folding and unfolding actions, but incorporates multiple fold angles to enhance functionality. Transsion has showcased numerous examples of this versatility:
- The phone can lie flat on a table with one-third of it folded, while the other two screens are positioned like a laptop.
- The device's two displays can form a triangular shape, with one screen lying flat on a bench, ideal for media consumption.
Transsion has optimized its software to fully leverage these varied folding configurations. The company reveals that both hinges have been tested to endure up to 300,000 folds.
While this remains a concept device, Transsion hasn't disclosed any specific specs or a potential release date. However, with the tri-fold smartphone market gaining momentum, Transsion's foray into this space may not be far off.
The arrival of the Phantom Ultimate 2 is sure to intensify competition in the tri-fold phone market. As more manufacturers join the fray, consumers will have a wider range of choices, making the future development of tri-fold phones all the more exciting to watch.
