Despite overall market growth, Apple saw a decline in iPhone sales in the US during July. According to Counterpoint, the US smartphone market overall saw a 5% year-on-year growth, driven primarily by gains from Samsung and Motorola, not Apple. In contrast, Apples share declined by 4% year-on-year, which Counterpoint attributes to low summer upgrade rates. This is not as bad as it sounds, as it signifies a drop from 53% to 49% of the share for Apple over the past two years.
A bar graph depicting the US smartphone market share in July shows Apple and Samsung at the top, with secondary brands declining. Motorola saw a 42% year-on-year growth, with Samsung at 23%, while Apple declined by 4%. The overall market grew by 5%.
Smartphone sales data for July 2024 and 2023 in the US shows that while overall iPhone sales declined, the iPhone 15 Pro saw a double-digit increase in sales. With overall sales dropping, the rise of the high-value, high-profit iPhone 15 Pro continues the consumer trend of opting for premium devices.
Previously, a report on July 31st showed the iPhone 15 Pros sales taking up 3.1% of the global smartphone sales in Q2, putting it at third place. It trailed behind the iPhone 15 Pro Max (3.7%) and the iPhone 15 (4.1%). The rise of high-end devices is always a welcome sign for analysts, as it suggests that consumers are willing to pay for higher-priced and higher-spec options.
With the emergence of AppleIntelligence and its likely potential to catalyze sales, all signs point towards a bright future for Apples best-sellers.
