The Folding Screen Phone Market Heats Up: Huawei Leads the Pack, vivo Rises Strongly
While Apple has yet to release a folding screen phone, the market for these devices is heating up, especially in China. Since their debut, sales of foldable phones have consistently grown, taking up an increasingly large proportion of the ultra-high-end segment. So, who reigns supreme in China's folding screen phone market?
On September 1st, industry insider "Smart Chip Guide" released data comparing domestic second-quarter sales of foldable phones, encompassing all form factors. Using Xiaomi as a baseline, the data showed OPPO's folding phone sales at 1.9 times Xiaomi's, Samsung's at 3.5 times, Honor's at 4.6 times, vivo's at 6.8 times, and Huawei's reaching a whopping 16.7 times Xiaomi's.
It's worth noting that vivo launched two new foldable phones in the second quarter, propelling it directly to the second-place spot with its strong market performance. Xiaomi, on the other hand, saw its second-quarter sales lag behind due to the late July launch of its new phone. Xiaomi is expected to see a sales rebound in the third quarter driven by the launch.
Smart Chip Guide also released data comparing overall folding screen phone sales in China year-to-date, using OPPO as the baseline as they haven't released a new folding phone yet. The data showed Xiaomi's sales at 1.1 times OPPO's, Samsung's at 1.6 times, vivo's at 1.7 times, Honor's at 2.8 times, and Huawei's reaching a commanding 7.9 times OPPO's.
It's notable that Xiaomi is currently the brand with the lowest folding phone sales, while Huawei and Honor lead the pack with 9 models each. The Xiaomi MIX Flip, thanks to its excellent performance, matched the sales of Honor's comparable model in just 5 weeks, which had taken 10 weeks, becoming a best-selling model.
From these two sets of data, we can conclude: the sales of folding screen phones are heavily reliant on new product launches. When brands release new phones, their sales increase significantly, while brands without new releases see relatively weaker sales. However, this pattern doesn't apply to Huawei. The influence of Huawei's folding phones far exceeds other brands, and their sales consistently maintain a leading position.
The data shows that Huawei possesses a strong market pull in the folding screen phone space, with its superior technical prowess and product experience enabling it to dominate the market. vivo, with the introduction of two new phones, has demonstrated strong market competitiveness, and its future development is worth watching. Xiaomi is expected to bounce back in the third quarter with its new phone addition.
Overall, the folding screen phone market is intensely competitive, with brands actively deploying resources to launch increasingly innovative and attractive products to capture market share. The future of the folding screen phone market promises to be even more exciting and challenging.
