Samsung and Apple continued to dominate the global smartphone sales ranking in the second quarter of 2024, holding a combined nine spots. However, the dominance of the two brands has slightly declined compared to the same period last year when they occupied all ten spots. Xiaomi successfully broke the two-quarter monopoly of Apple and Samsung, ranking eighth with its Redmi 13C 4G model.

Apple iPhone 15 Series Continues to Sell Well

The Apple iPhone 15 outperformed the iPhone 15 Pro Max in sales this quarter, topping the chart. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 14 were ranked second, third, and sixth, respectively. Compared to the same period last year, the iPhone 15 series saw a 4% increase in sales in the second quarter of 2024, reflecting the continued high demand for the new iPhones among consumers.

Samsung's A Series Shows Steady Performance

Samsung's A-series smartphones have performed well in various regions. The Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A15 4G secured the fourth and fifth spots on the list, respectively. The mid-to-high-end Galaxy A55 5G, equipped with some interesting security features, ranked seventh. Another low-end model, the Galaxy A05, came in at tenth.

While the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra fell to ninth in the second quarter of 2024, industry insiders believe this could be due to the earlier release of the flagship model this year, leading to some sales shifting to the first quarter.

Xiaomi Breaks Through with Price-Performance Ratio

As the only brand on the list besides Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi's Redmi 13C 4G successfully secured the eighth spot with its excellent price-performance ratio. It is understood that the Xiaomi Redmi C smartphone is an upgrade to the low-end A-series models, and the previous generation Redmi 12C also made it to the top ten list.

High-End Phone Sales Share Declines

Overall, five high-end phones were among the top ten in the second quarter of 2024, the same number as in the second quarter of 2023. However, their combined sales accounted for a decrease of approximately 1.5% in the global smartphone market share. Research firms analyze that the decline in market share is mainly attributed to the earlier release of the Samsung S24 Ultra and the underwhelming sales of the China-specific edition of Apple's iPhone 15. Additionally, industry insiders point out that a significant portion of Apple's lost market share went to Huawei's high-end models.

AI Empowers the Smartphone Market

Market research firm Counterpoint Research recently issued a forecast that global smartphone shipments will reach 1.23 billion units in 2024, representing a 5% year-over-year increase, ending two consecutive years of decline. Among these, the share of smartphones with GenAI capabilities is expected to increase from less than one-fifth in 2024 to over half in 2028.

Commenting on the near-term outlook, Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak said, "In terms of shipments, we're seeing a gradual recovery in the global smartphone market. The continued premiumization trend coupled with the AI trend is likely to push up average selling prices and revenue in the coming quarters."

Smartphones are the perfect platform to bring AI to everyone. Generative AI, in particular, is transforming smartphones, providing personalized experiences, enhancing existing features, and allowing for more intuitive interactions. By 2024, generative AI is projected to account for 18% of overall smartphone shipments.
