Research firm Canalys has released data on smartphone processor shipments for the second quarter of 2024, showing MediaTek continued to hold the top spot with shipments reaching 115.3 million units, representing a 7% year-on-year increase. This demonstrates its strong competitive position in the smartphone market. Qualcomm came in second with 71 million units shipped, growing by 6% year-on-year. Apple ranked third with 46 million units shipped, also up by 6% year-on-year.

Unisoc continued its strong performance in the entry-level market, achieving shipments of 25 million units, a 42% year-on-year increase, placing it fourth. This showcases its robust momentum in this segment. Samsung rounded out the top five with 17 million units shipped, marking a 9% year-on-year increase. HiSilicon returned to the rankings, securing sixth place with 8 million units shipped in Q2, signaling its determination to re-enter the smartphone processor market. Google's Tensor processor shipped 2 million units, down 3% year-on-year, ranking seventh.

It's worth noting that Apple's A17 Pro and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, both of which support AI, claimed the top two positions in total value of smartphone shipments. The total shipment volume for Samsung SoC increased by 9%, while the value of its shipments grew by 71% year-on-year, primarily driven by its AI-powered flagship product, Exynos 2400.

The data reveals a highly competitive smartphone processor market, with each player actively vying for a foothold. MediaTek's sustained leadership, alongside the relentless pursuit of Qualcomm and Apple, underscores the intensity of market rivalry. The emergence of strong players like Unisoc and HiSilicon injects fresh dynamism into the market.
