Osom Phone, founded by former Essential employee Jason Keats after the demise of the Essential phone, has met its own end. The company, once touted as a successor to the Essential Phone's spirit, succumbed to financial difficulties.

In May 2024, Osom announced a pivot to a new project, but failed to attract any investor interest. To maintain cash flow, the company was forced to lay off employees, but it was not enough to prevent its downfall. In a statement to The Verge, the company attributed its closure to the bleak overall market environment, which prevented it from securing a new round of funding.

During its lifetime, Osom only released one phone, the Solana Saga, which was touted as "a continuation of the Essential Phone spirit." While it boasted several noteworthy features, it ultimately failed to save the company from drowning.

The Solana Saga featured a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.67-inch 120Hz OLED display, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, and 512GB UFS storage. Its most notable feature was its Web3 capabilities. It ran a custom Android 13 system with SeedVault, SolanadApps app store, and SagaPass access to VIP events, community forums, and NFT content.

Despite these features, the phone's $1000 price tag (around 7240) failed to make much of a splash in the highly competitive smartphone market.

Apart from the product's positioning issues, Osom also faced internal management challenges. On the 1st of this month, CEO Jason Keats was exposed for misappropriating company funds to purchase a Lamborghini, escalating internal turmoil and external scrutiny.

The closure of Osom highlights the harsh realities of smartphone market competition. Even with unique concepts and advanced technology, a lack of strong financial support and effective marketing strategies can lead to failure.

Here are some potential reasons for Osom's demise:

  • Unclear Market Positioning: Despite Osom's attempt to position the Solana Saga as a Web3 phone, its features didn't resonate with consumers, and the price tag was relatively high.
  • Insufficient Funding: Osom consistently faced funding shortages, hindering product development and marketing efforts.

  • Internal Management Chaos: Jason Keats's misappropriation of funds exacerbated internal chaos and damaged the company's reputation.
  • Deteriorating Market Conditions: The global economic downturn and intensifying smartphone market competition made it tough for Osom to stand out.

Osom's closure serves as a wake-up call for other phone manufacturers, urging them to prioritize product development, marketing, and internal management to survive in the fiercely competitive market.
