A Quebec, Canada lawyer, Joey Zukran, has recently filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company has engaged in misleading advertising regarding the waterproof capabilities of iPhones and has refused to provide repair services for water-damaged devices. Zukran argues that Apple's advertisements imply that iPhones can be submerged in water without being damaged, but when consumers attempt to repair devices that have suffered water damage, Apple refuses warranty service citing "liquid contact." This practice, he argues, contradicts Apple's marketing and the "liquid contact" exclusion in the warranty is "completely absurd."

The lawsuit centers on the discrepancy between Apple's iPhone waterproofing claims and its warranty terms. Zukran points out two conflicting clauses in Apple's contract: one claims the phone is "drop-proof" and can be used in water without worry, while the other claims that liquid contact will void the warranty. According to legal precedent, such interpretations must be in favor of the consumer.

Zukran believes that Apple's advertising has misled consumers into believing that iPhones are impervious to water damage, when in reality, they are not. When users experience water damage to their phones, they are unable to avail themselves of the warranty service offered by Apple, resulting in financial loss for them.

The lawsuit demands that Apple remove the "liquid contact" exclusion from its warranty, reimburse all repair costs incurred due to water damage, and provide a $500 compensation to each affected consumer.

It's worth noting that this isn't Zukran's first lawsuit against Apple. In 2019, he filed a lawsuit against Apple over iPhone battery life issues, which ultimately resulted in a verdict unfavorable to Apple in the Quebec court.

This lawsuit has prompted public scrutiny of Apple's waterproofing claims and sparked discussions about consumer protection. In recent years, many smartphone brands have advertised their products as waterproof, but in real-world usage, users have found these claims to be inaccurate.

As smartphone capabilities continue to improve, users are demanding higher levels of water resistance. Balancing corporate advertising with consumer rights protection will be a critical issue to address in the future.
