Samsung PRO/EVOPlus microSD Card 1TB Review: Speed and Stability in Large Capacity
Last year, we conducted a comprehensive review of the upgraded Samsung PROPlus microSD card. As the flagship model in Samsung's memory card lineup, this card has reached industry-leading levels in both storage performance and capacity. With its exceptional performance, this product has been a top seller on major e-commerce platforms, winning the favor of many users who seek a stable and high-speed storage experience. Recently, to meet the growing demand for mobile storage, Samsung has launched 1TB versions of its PROPlus and EVOPlus microSD cards. This "expansion" upgrade will provide more efficient solutions for applications like portable video shooting, long-term surveillance recording, and game console storage expansion. This article will review these two 1TB microSD cards, focusing on whether their read/write speeds, actual available capacity, and user experience can delight consumers.
Samsung PRO/EVOPlus microSD Card 1TB Packaging/Appearance/Features
In terms of packaging, both products adopt Samsung's latest generation of storage packaging design. The PROPlus and EVOPlus models feature a unique color design system, reflecting their performance characteristics and market positioning through different shades of blue. The Samsung PROPlus microSD card (hereafter referred to as Samsung PROPlus) utilizes a deeper, more profound space blue, while the Samsung EVOPlus microSD card (hereafter referred to as Samsung EVOPlus) presents a brighter, lower-saturated sky blue. This clever color differentiation strategy not only clarifies product lines but also provides consumers with intuitive visual guidance, simplifying the selection process.
The front of the packaging prominently displays key product information, including storage capacity, maximum read/write speed, product series name, and applicable device icons. To enhance the user experience, the package also includes a MicroSD to SD card adapter. This accessory not only features a write-protect switch, increasing data security, but also enhances compatibility with various devices, providing users with more diverse storage solutions.
The back of the packaging for both cards lists the basic features of the storage card:
1. Waterproof Performance: Can withstand immersion in 1 meter deep saltwater (seawater) for 72 hours.
2. High/Low Temperature Resistance: Can operate in environments ranging from -25C to 85C and can be stored in environments ranging from -40C to 85C.
3. X-ray Resistance: Can withstand 100 milligray (approximately equivalent to the radiation emitted by airport security scanners).
4. Magnetic Resistance: Can resist 15,000 Gauss or higher (approximately equivalent to the magnetic field generated during an MRI scan; no need to worry about security checks at subways, airports, or train stations).
5. Impact Resistance: Can withstand impacts of up to 1500g.
6. Drop Resistance: Can withstand drops from a height of 5 meters.
7. Wear Resistance: Can withstand 10,000 insertions and removals (4 times a day, allowing for continuous use for 2500 days) without malfunction.
The appearance of the storage cards is also differentiated by color. The Samsung PROPlus uses a deep blue color, while the EVOPlus features a white card body. Both cards have speed indicators printed on them, including U3, A2, and V30, as well as the U3 logo.
- U3 (UHS Speed Class 3) Definition: Minimum sustained write speed of 30MB/s.
- Application Scenarios: Suitable for recording 4K Ultra HD videos, ensuring stable video data writing.
- A2 (Application Performance Class 2) Performance: Provides excellent random read/write performance.
- Advantages: Significantly improves the running speed of applications on mobile devices.
- V30 (Video Speed Class 30) Feature: Consistent with the U3 standard, the minimum sustained write speed is 30MB/s.
- Function: Optimized for 4K video recording, ensuring smooth capture of high-quality video content.
Samsung PRO/EVOPlus microSD Card 1TB Performance Testing/Actual Experience
Samsung PROPlus microSD Card 1TB
To comprehensively evaluate the performance of the Samsung PROPlus microSD card (1TB version), we conducted a series of professional tests. The test environment employed an official Samsung SD card reader connected to a computer via a USB3.2 Gen2 interface (theoretical maximum speed of 1250MB/s).
First, we used Samsung Magician software for benchmark testing. The results showed that the card achieved a sequential read speed of 182MB/s and a sequential write speed of 135MB/s, meeting the officially claimed speed standards. It's worth noting that in the Windows system, the actual available capacity was 954GB.
Next, we utilized CrystalDiskMark software for more in-depth testing. In the 1GB file test, this microSD card exhibited excellent performance: a write speed of 181.93MB/s and a read speed of 149.86MB/s. These speeds are sufficient to meet the demands of high-speed photography and 4K60fps or higher video recording.
To further verify the read/write performance across different file sizes, we employed the ATTO Disk Benchmark tool. The test results showed that the Samsung PROPlus microSD card 2023 version achieved a maximum read speed of 174.15MB/s and a maximum write speed of 144.91MB/s. Its performance remained consistently stable across various file sizes.
Considering the card's potential use for video recording, we also used the AJA SystemTest tool for dedicated video performance testing. This tool simulates specific video frame size and frame rate workflows, more closely resembling real-world usage scenarios. When simulating the processing of 1920x1080 HD resolution, 10-bit YUV encoding, and 1GB file size video data, the card performed exceptionally well, achieving a read speed of 173MB/s and a write speed of 142MB/s.
Finally, we used Blackmagic Design Disk SpeedTest software for media file support testing. The results indicated a write speed of 142.6MB/s and a read speed of 173.4MB/s. This signifies that the card can support H.265 encoding for 8KDCI60fps video recording, and it can also easily handle 4K25fps video shooting in Apple ProRes 422 format.
Samsung EVOPlus microSD Card 1TB
We also conducted thorough testing on the Samsung EVOPlus microSD Card 1TB. This test utilized an official Samsung SD card reader equipped with an SD card slot and connected to a computer via a USB3.2 Gen2 interface (theoretical maximum transfer speed of 1250MB/s).
In Samsung Magician software, the card's sequential read speed reached 168MB/s, and the sequential write speed was 126MB/s, fully meeting the officially stated performance standards. It's important to note that the card's actual available capacity in the Windows system was 954GB.
Using CrystalDiskMark software for further testing, in the 1GB file test, the card's actual measured write speed was 165.77MB/s, and the read speed was 126.81MB/s, both exceeding the officially claimed speeds.
In the ATTO Disk Benchmark tool test, the card achieved a maximum read speed of 163.05MB/s and a maximum write speed of 125.80MB/s. In the 64KB file size test, the speed was close to the peak, indicating that the card can maintain efficient transfer performance even when transferring smaller files, avoiding speed degradation when dealing with a large number of files.
Testing with the AJA SystemTest tool showed that the card's read speed was 157MB/s and its write speed was 122MB/s, demonstrating consistent performance.
Finally, in Blackmagic Design Disk SpeedTest, the measured write speed was 121.6MB/s and the read speed was 158.1MB/s. This indicates that the card can support H.265 encoding for 8KDCI60fps video recording, and it can also easily handle 4K25fps video shooting in Apple ProRes 422 format.
Actual Experience
In real-world usage, as users purchasing large-capacity microSD cards often pair them with devices like GoPro, drones, and Insta360, we chose GoPro and DJI Osmo Pocket 3 as our test devices.
In the long-duration recording test, we used the Samsung PROPlus 1TB microSD storage card and conducted continuous video recording experiments with the GoPro action camera across various image quality modes. The test results were impressive:
- In the 2K-240fps high frame rate mode, the GoPro could continuously record video content for up to 19 hours and 6 minutes.
- Similarly outstanding performance was observed in the 4K-120
