Apple's iPhone 16 Series: USB-C Upgrade, But Speed Lags Behind?

Apple transitioned from Lightning to USB-C on its iPhone 15 series, a significant change. However, the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro did not upgrade the data transfer standards as many anticipated, instead opting to retain the existing USB standard.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus maintain the previous generation's USB 2.0 standard, with a maximum speed of 480 Mbps (or 60 MB/s, equivalent to Lightning speeds). This outcome undoubtedly disappoints many users hoping for faster data transfer speeds.

During today's launch event, Apple mentioned faster USB 3 speeds when introducing the A18 Pro. However, the final announcement revealed that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max still utilize USB 3, achieving a maximum of 10 Gbps. This implies that Apple's comparison during the event was between the A18 Pro and A18, merely highlighting features already present in the iPhone 15 Pro.

It's worth noting that while Apple refers to it as USB 3, this speed actually corresponds to the USB 3.1 Gen 2 standard. Nevertheless, to fully exploit this transfer speed, users require a compatible 10 Gb/s data cable.

In contrast, Apple's iPad Pro also incorporates a USB-C port but supports the Thunderbolt standard at 40 Gb/s, four times faster than the iPhone 16 Pro/Max.

Overall, Apple's interface upgrade in the iPhone 16 series has not delivered the anticipated substantial changes. While the inclusion of USB-C does enhance compatibility, data transfer speeds haven't shown significant improvement, even reaching only USB 3.1 Gen 2 levels on the Pro versions. In comparison, the iPad Pro's Thunderbolt standard is more advanced, making one wonder about Apple's conservative approach to data transfer speeds.

When purchasing an iPhone 16, users should carefully consider their real needs, factoring in data transfer speed and interface standards to make an informed decision.
