Huawei has just launched the world's first tri-folding smartphone, the Mate XT Ultimate. This phone can be folded three times into a compact cube. However, even with this three-panel folding design, its folded thickness is almost comparable to Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold6. On paper, the Mate XT boasts a thickness of 12.8 mm, while the Fold6 measures 12.1 mm, making Samsung the winner on paper. However, take a look at the images above. A difference of 0.7 mm is almost imperceptible to the human eye. Furthermore, the Huawei's tri-folding screen measures 10.2 inches, compared to the Fold6's 7.6-inch foldable display, which Samsung simply cannot compete with.

Samsung fans will argue that the Korean company has been much more diligent in terms of robustness and durability of their foldable phones, which is why their last genuine innovation in this space seems to have been the original Galaxy Fold launched in 2019. They have taken their time to perfect the details, ensuring every aspect of their foldable devices is reliable enough.

The other camp will point out that Samsungs foldable phones have remained largely the same for years with only minor improvements every year, most of which are actually Samsung fixing their own problems (like the narrow outer form factor when folded) very slowly, while Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei with their tri-fold phone, and Honor with their MagicV3 (which is also quite thin), are the real innovators in this space recently.

The emergence of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has undoubtedly injected new energy into the foldable phone market.
