HarmonyOS Makes a Breakthrough: HarmonyOS NEXT Official Version to be Released at the End of September
At the 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services, Chen Xinxin, General Manager of Huawei's HarmonyOS industry solutions, revealed that the brand new "pure-blood" HarmonyOS, HarmonyOS NEXT, will launch its official version at the end of September this year. This news signifies a new stage in the development of the HarmonyOS operating system and foreshadows a possible reshaping of the future mobile operating system landscape.
It is understood that HarmonyOS NEXT is the first major version of HarmonyOS to completely abandon the Linux kernel and Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code. It only supports HarmonyOS kernel and HarmonyOS applications and is no longer compatible with Android applications. This bold innovation means that HarmonyOS NEXT will fully embrace independent research and development, creating a separate and complete ecosystem.
As early as April this year, Huawei launched the first version of HarmonyOS NEXT, dubbed HarmonyOS Star River Edition, and showcased it alongside other products. Subsequently, in August, Huawei officially launched the HarmonyOS NEXT public beta recruitment program, supporting models such as Mate60 series, Pura70 series, MateX5, and Pocket2 to participate in testing. Currently, the number of native applications for HarmonyOS NEXT HarmonyOS Star River Edition has exceeded 4000, laying a solid foundation for the official release of HarmonyOS NEXT.
HarmonyOS NEXT's daring move to abandon Android and launch a brand new "pure-blood" system is undoubtedly a testament to its confidence. The abundance of native applications also serves as a crucial support for this decision. In recent years, Huawei has invested heavily in manpower and resources in application ecosystem development, achieving remarkable results. Currently, the accumulation of over 4000 native applications is enough to satisfy user's daily needs, paving the way for HarmonyOS NEXT's success.
With the release of the official version, HarmonyOS NEXT will further propel the development of the HarmonyOS system and stir up a new wave in the mobile operating system field. In the future, whether HarmonyOS NEXT can achieve success and compete on par with operating systems like Android and iOS remains to be seen.
