A recent report by Counterpoint Research, a renowned consumer electronics research firm, reveals that Apple has been dethroned by Chinese brand Xiaomi in the global smartphone market in August, marking the first time in three years. This surprising outcome has sparked concerns about Apples future dominance.

Counterpoint Research attributes this change to two primary factors. Firstly, Apples iPhone sales typically experience a seasonal dip ahead of new product launches in September. Secondly, while Xiaomis August sales remained flat month-over-month, the brand boasts a 22% year-over-year growth, making it one of the fastest-growing brands in the first half of 2024. Even with a projected slowdown in the second half due to the base effect, Counterpoint anticipates Xiaomis full-year growth to reach a "strong double-digit percentage."

Xiaomis strong performance stems from its streamlined product strategy, focusing on developing flagship models across price points rather than introducing numerous devices within a single segment. This approach enables Xiaomi to remain competitive in the entry-level and mid-range markets while simultaneously making inroads into the high-end segment with its foldable and Ultra series.

Although Apple is expected to reclaim the second and potentially the first spot globally after Octobers new product launch, the intensifying competition in the high-end smartphone market and Apples hibernation in areas like foldable displays and generative AI, pose potential threats to iPhone sales.

iPhones Upgrade Cycle Remains Uncertain

Weekend analysis suggests that pre-orders for the two iPhone 16 Pro models have significantly underperformed compared to their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, specifically, is projected to reach 17.1 million pre-orders in the first weekend, representing a 16% decline compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max during the same period. Conversely, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, due to hardware upgrades, have witnessed better pre-order numbers than their predecessors.

This trend has ignited concerns regarding the iPhone 16 Pro series demand. Renowned consumer electronics analyst Ming-Chi Kuo attributes the lower-than-expected demand to the delayed release of Apple Intelligence in sync with the phone and fierce competition from the Chinese market.

Currently, Apple Intelligence is limited to English-speaking users in the United States. Localized English support for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK is anticipated for December this year. Users of languages such as Chinese, French, Spanish, and Japanese will have to wait until next year for a true Apple AI experience.

This delayed release strategy may lead some high-end users to adopt a wait-and-see approach, especially iPhone 16 Pro Max users who might opt to await the next years iPhone 17 Pro Max, rumored to be the first model featuring 12GB of RAM and TSMCs 2nm chip.
