Recently, techinsights, a testing agency, conducted a teardown of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, revealing that the new device uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 5G modem SDX71M, contrary to rumors of the Snapdragon X75. Thanks to this new 5G modem, the iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts significantly faster download speeds compared to the 15 Pro Max.
According to Speedsmart, a speed testing platform, the iPhone 16 Pro series has the fastest 5G speeds on the T-Mobile network, averaging 447.5Mbps for download speeds, outperforming the previous generation's 376.15Mbps. Average upload speeds also saw an improvement, reaching 37.27Mbps compared to the previous generation's 30.76Mbps.
The iPhone 16 Pro series not only shines on the T-Mobile network but also exhibits noticeable 5G speed advancements on AT&T and Verizon, the two major US carriers. Average download speeds reached 269.48Mbps on AT&T and 409.88Mbps on Verizon's 5G network.
It's worth noting that while Apple chose Qualcomm's modem for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, they haven't abandoned their plans to develop a 5G modem in-house. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple's self-developed 5G modem will be commercially available next year, debuting in the iPhone SE4, while the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, slated for the second half of next year, will also feature Apple's own 5G modem.
Apple's self-developed 5G modem traces back to 2019 when they acquired Intel's smartphone modem business, including 2,200 engineers.
