Verizon Massive Network Outage Impacts Users Nationwide, iPhone Users Receive "SOS" Alerts
Verizon is currently experiencing a major outage affecting numerous users across the United States, including iPhone users. Affected users are unable to make calls, send text messages, or use cellular data. Due to the network disruption, many affected iPhone users are seeing an "SOS" alert in their device's status bar.
In a support document, Apple states that the "SOS" alert appears on iPhones when they are not connected to a network, but emergency calls can still be made in the US, Australia, and Canada.
Verizon, in a statement, acknowledged "being aware of an issue impacting some customer services" and is working to identify and implement a fix. The company did not specify the cause of the outage or when it might be resolved.
For iPhone 14 or newer models, the satellite emergency SOS feature offered by Apple allows users to send text messages to emergency services when they are in supported areas of the US lacking cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
