HMD Global recently released a new Android 14 update (V1.480) for its HMD Skyline phone. The update includes the September 2024 Google security patch and is 294MB in size. The most notable feature of this update is the newly introduced "Digital Detox" mode.
According to IT Home, this mode is specifically designed for users who want to reduce screen time and avoid digital distractions. HMD states that users can access a widget menu by long-pressing any blank area on the home screen, where they can add a series of "Digital Detox" configuration widgets. Users can activate "Detox Mode" within the widget and freely set the usage time for individual applications while in "Detox Mode," thus fostering healthy smartphone habits.
Apart from Skyline, HMD is also rolling out updates to its Fusion and Vibe devices, bringing all their security patches to September 2024. However, the "Digital Detox" mode is currently an exclusive feature available only on the HMD Skyline.
The introduction of "Digital Detox" mode signifies HMD Global's growing concern for users' mental health and digital well-being. With the widespread adoption of smartphones, people have become increasingly prone to phone addiction, leading to excessive use and anxiety. HMD Global's "Digital Detox" mode provides users with an effective tool to control their smartphone usage time, helping them enjoy the convenience of technology while avoiding over-reliance and negative impacts.
It's worth noting that HMD Global isn't the only mobile manufacturer dedicated to digital well-being. Brands like Apple and Samsung have previously rolled out similar "Screen Time" or "Digital Wellbeing" features, aiming to guide users towards healthier smartphone usage.
We can expect HMD Global to extend the "Digital Detox" mode to more phone models in the future, offering a healthy and convenient smartphone experience to a wider user base.
