A fire at a Tata Group iPhone parts plant in southern India has resulted in an indefinite shutdown, potentially forcing Apple to face production disruptions during the upcoming holiday season and consider emergency sourcing of key components from China or other regions, according to sources.

iPhone Parts Plant Fire in India Could Disrupt Apple Production, Impact Holiday Sales

The fire occurred at a Tata Electronics factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, which is the sole Indian supplier of rear panels and other parts to Foxconn and its assembly plants, which manufacture iPhones for Apple. The incident not only affects the projected sale of 1.5 million iPhones during India's Diwali festival, including the iPhone 14 and 15, but could also make it difficult for Apple to meet up to 15% of market demand.

Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research, pointed out that while Apple could offset some impact by importing more parts and diverting export inventory to India, production of older iPhone models could still be affected by 10%-15%. Currently, Apple suppliers in India typically maintain 3-4 weeks of back panel inventory. However, industry experts estimate that Apple may have up to 8 weeks of inventory, making the immediate impact minimal.

However, if the production halt persists, Apple may consider establishing new assembly lines in China or adding shifts to ensure component supply for Indian iPhone manufacturers.

The shutdown of Indian iPhone manufacturers could have significant implications for Apple's global supply chain. The company has been striving to diversify its manufacturing out of China in recent years to reduce dependence on the Chinese supply chain. India has been an important part of Apple's strategy, and this incident could force Apple to reconsider its global supply chain strategy.

Furthermore, the fire has raised concerns about the safety of India's manufacturing sector. Despite the Indian government's efforts to attract manufacturers, this event could potentially damage India's investment attractiveness.

Apple has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and taking steps to minimize the impact on production. However, the long-term ramifications of the fire remain uncertain. The market will continue to observe how Apple responds to this event in the upcoming weeks.
