While Microsoft's Surface Duo series of dual-screen phones has faded from the spotlight, the company hasn't abandoned its exploration in the mobile space. Recently, a new phone patent from Microsoft was granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on October 1, 2024, showcasing a "SurfacePhone" device with a hinge capable of 360-degree rotation.

The patent reveals that Microsoft has employed "laser modification" and "wet etching techniques" to develop a method that enables the device's panels to fold in various directions. This technology allows the folding screen device's hinge to have a unique groove structure, effectively preventing creases from forming on the flexible screen during folding.

Importantly, this "SurfacePhone" supports the detection of four folding angles: 0 degrees, 180 degrees, 300 degrees, and 360 degrees. This implies that the device can be switched to different forms a traditional phone, a tablet, a laptop depending on the user's needs, offering a more flexible user experience and enhanced productivity.

This patent application suggests that Microsoft is considering restarting its phone business, focusing on foldable devices. Previously, rumors suggested that Microsoft had canceled the development of the Surface Duo 3, shifting its focus towards foldable phones and smartphones with straight screens. After the departure of Panos Panay, former head of Microsoft's Windows and Devices division, there were also rumors circulating that "no new Surface Duo, Surface Studio, or Surface Headphones products would be released in the foreseeable future."
