The Bitcoin Mystery: Documentary Reveals Satoshi Nakamoto's Identity?
- On October 8th, at 9 pm EST, HBO premiered Cullen Hoback's documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery. The film boldly reveals the identity of Bitcoin's mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, pointing to early Bitcoin developer Peter Todd as the man behind the pseudonym.
Hoback pieced together old and new leads, confronting Todd and Adam Back, the founder of Blockstream, another key suspect, with the evidence, ultimately reaching this conclusion. One piece of evidence he relied on was a post Todd made on a Bitcoin message board in 2010, which Hoback believes could have been written by "Satoshi Nakamoto." At the end of the documentary, Hoback asks Todd: "It seems you had such deep insight into Bitcoin back then?" Todd replies, "Well, yes, I am Satoshi."
However, the protagonist, Todd, quickly denied the claim on X, calling Hoback's film "nonsense." The release of the documentary has sparked massive criticism online, with many in the crypto community questioning the film's conclusions. Some believe the evidence presented in the film is not enough to definitively prove a connection between Todd and Satoshi Nakamoto.
Todd, a Canadian, has been coding for Bitcoin since 2012, and calls himself "Crypto Time Lord" on X. He is also the founder of OpenTimestamps, an open-source project dedicated to providing a standardized blockchain timestamp format. The 39-year-old Todd graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and was just 23 when the famous Bitcoin whitepaper, which first outlined the vision for a decentralized monetary system, was completed. Todd previously stated on a podcast that he first interacted with key influencers in the crypto space, namely cypherpunks, at the age of 15. He also participated in what is known as "Bitcoin 2.0" projects, including Counterparty, Mastercoin, and ColoredCoins, and in 2016, he collaborated with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to launch the privacy coin zcash, even publicly destroying the computer used to create the cryptocurrency.
Satoshi Nakamoto's identity has long been a topic of discussion. Some say that if Nakamoto is still alive, he could control as many as 680,000 Bitcoins, worth an estimated $45 billion. Despite speculation that has lasted over a decade, Satoshi's identity has remained anonymous. Some speculate that he was one person, while others believe he was a group of people.
Nic Carter, founding partner of CastleIslandVentures, said: "From a technical standpoint, Todd is one of the most important contributors to Bitcoin. I've known him since 2017, and he's generally viewed as having significant insights into Bitcoin. But I'm certain that Todd isn't Satoshi, partially because the creator of Bitcoin had such deep knowledge of cryptography and digital cash systems."
Carter also pointed out: "There's no bigger mystery in history. It's truly amazing that Satoshi Nakamoto allegedly holds a massive amount of Bitcoin tokens, and he managed to do that. Personally, I hope we never know who Satoshi is."
- Hoback is a master of exposing mysteries. His previous documentary series, Q: Into the Storm, investigated the QAnon conspiracy theory and earned a 2021 Emmy nomination. The release of the documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery has reignited interest in the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. Whether this film can truly unlock the Bitcoin mystery remains to be seen.
