Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Dan Riccio, Retires After Leading Vision Pro Development
Longtime Apple employee Dan Riccio will retire from the company later this month. The veteran, who has been with Apple for 26 years, most recently served as Senior Vice President of Engineering, overseeing the development of the Vision Pro and reporting directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Riccio joined Apple in June 1998 as Director of Product Design. He was promoted to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in August 2012, a position he held for over eight years. In 2021, he transitioned to an undisclosed new project, later revealed to be the Vision Pro headset.
Under Riccio's leadership, Apple's hardware engineering team achieved significant success. He oversaw the development of products like the AirPods, iPad Pro, and the first large-screen iPhones, all of which became benchmarks in their respective categories. He was also actively involved in the development of Apple's self-driving car project, although it was ultimately abandoned.
Riccio's departure will be a significant loss for Apple, but his contributions to the company will be remembered forever. John Ternus will succeed Riccio as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, assuming responsibility for the development of Vision Pro and the thousands of engineers in the Vision Products Group. Mike Rockwell will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Vision Pro and similar headsets.
Riccio's retirement marks a significant change for Apple's hardware team, but it won't affect the company's continued pursuit of innovation and breakthroughs in hardware. With Ternus and Rockwell at the helm, the Apple hardware team is expected to continue creating products that captivate consumers.
