If a new report is to be believed, Apple is aiming to outdo its rivals in technology before entering the foldable smartphone market. The company has so far stayed away from the foldable smartphone market, which has seen significant growth over the past few years. While Samsung recently holds dominance in the foldable and flip phone market, Huawei shocked the world with its tri-fold phone. Apple is reportedly looking to control certain aspects of such an ambitious product.
Earlier reports suggested that Samsung Display, the display panel arm of Samsung Electronics, would supply the display panels for the foldable iPhone. There were also rumors hinting that Apple could launch its first foldable iPhone with a clamshell design in 2026. However, later reports suggested that Apple wanted to resolve the display crease issue before launching a foldable iPhone, pushing the launch back to 2027.
Now, a new report from Kipost reveals that Apple wants to have more control over the UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), a crucial part of foldable screens mainly controlled by Samsung Display. Not only UTG, but Apple also wants to control the back panel component, another vital part of a foldable phone as it supports the display. It needs to be durable so that the foldable phone has a longer lifespan.
Besides these two crucial components, Apple is also concerned about the limitation of its product's uniqueness by having heavy dependency on a display manufacturer. As Apple is late to the market, it wants to justify its lateness with a unique product or at least provide some unique selling points.
To some extent, Apple's move is understandable. After all, the company is known for its premium products and innovative technology. To succeed in the foldable phone market, it must demonstrate a distinct technological edge.
However, Apple's foldable phone ambitions face several challenges. Firstly, Samsung has accumulated vast experience in the foldable phone market and boasts a strong supply chain. Secondly, other manufacturers are actively developing foldable phones, making market competition intense.
Despite these challenges, Apple's entry will undoubtedly inject new energy into the foldable phone market. We expect to see more innovative products from Apple and more intense competition in the future.
