According to a tipster in the mobile chip industry, the iPhone 18 series, set to launch in 2026, will be the first to feature the A20 processor built on TSMC's 2nm process, alongside a significant boost in RAM, reaching up to 12GB. This upgrade is primarily expected on the top-of-the-line iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the standard iPhone 18 might stick with the 3nm process and retain 8GB of RAM.

This news reaffirms Apple's long-standing partnership with TSMC and its consistent leadership in adopting cutting-edge process technology. From 7nm, 5nm, and 3nm to the upcoming 2nm, Apple has always been a pioneer in embracing these advancements. TSMC is slated to begin mass production of the 2nm technology by the end of next year, and Apple has reportedly secured all of the initial production capacity. Compared to the 3nm process, the 2nm technology is projected to deliver a 10%-15% performance improvement while reducing power consumption by up to 30%.

Despite the significant upgrades expected in the iPhone 18 series, the iPhone 17 series scheduled for release next year will continue to rely on the 3nm process and maintain 8GB of RAM. However, Apple plans to introduce ProMotion technology to the standard iPhone 17, enabling all models to feature 120Hz ProMotion always-on displays, enhancing the user experience.

These ongoing upgrades foreshadow a future where smartphone performance and power efficiency continue to advance, with Apple at the forefront of this evolution. For consumers, this translates to more powerful performance, smoother operating experiences, and longer battery life. However, some wonder if Apple can maintain its software ecosystem's advantage and deliver an even more compelling user experience as hardware performance relentlessly improves. Only time will tell.
