Honor Magic7 Series to Feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, Kirin Chipset Unlikely to Return in the Short Term?
On October 16, during a live stream event, Honor CEO Zhao Ming addressed the issue of chipsets used in Honor phones. In response to a user's question about whether Honor phones would use Kirin chipsets again, Zhao Ming confirmed that the next generation Honor Magic7 series will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. Regarding the Kirin chip, he candidly admitted that it's unlikely to be used in Honor devices in the near future.
Since its development, Huawei has always maintained exclusive use of its self-developed Kirin chipset, never selling it to external parties. Huawei has stated that the Kirin chip's production capacity is insufficient to meet its own needs, hence it has never considered selling it to others. However, with time, the possibility of Kirin chip sales to other companies is not completely ruled out.
Honor, formerly a sub-brand of Huawei, has now become an independent entity and a competitor to its parent company. If the Kirin chip were to be made available for sale in the future, Honor would undoubtedly be a prime candidate as a buyer, given the strong historical relationship between the two companies.
However, Zhao Ming's statement holds weight. Even considering the production capacity aspect, it would be challenging for Honor to obtain Kirin chips in the short term. Huawei's own products have a substantial demand for the Kirin chip, making it improbable to allocate limited production capacity to Honor. Additionally, Honor devices that do not run HarmonyOS would struggle to fully leverage the potential of the Kirin chipset.
Overall, while Honor and Huawei share a close connection, the chances of Honor phones using Kirin chipsets in the near term are extremely slim. Whether future collaborations are possible remains to be seen.
