These features will be rolled out gradually, with the first wave of updates expected to arrive in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1. However, Apple has already begun laying the groundwork for the next wave of updates, which includes a highly anticipated feature: Siri integration with ChatGPT.

Explicit references to Siri's integration with ChatGPT have been found in Apple's internal code, indicating that Apple is actively preparing to implement this functionality in future releases. The code mentions ChatGPT-generated text and image options, suggesting that both functionalities will soon be integrated into Siri.

Siri's integration with ChatGPT is part of the AppleIntelligence feature set, which was announced earlier this year at the Worldwide Developers Conference and is slated to launch later this year. While no signs of ChatGPT integration are currently present in beta software, it is anticipated to arrive in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2.

News of ChatGPT's integration with Siri first surfaced in early October, alongside rumors of another AI feature called VisualIntelligence. The separate mention of text and image generation capabilities now suggests that Apple is actively preparing for the launch of these features behind the scenes.

By integrating ChatGPT, Siri will gain the ability to provide users with more powerful information retrieval and creative content generation capabilities. When users pose complex questions to Siri that their personal assistant cannot handle, Siri will suggest that the question be forwarded to ChatGPT. ChatGPT will provide relevant information and relay it to the user through Siri.

ChatGPT's text and image generation capabilities will offer users more powerful creative tools. While the AppleIntelligence suite includes some similar functionalities, ChatGPT's capabilities are more robust and comprehensive. For example, Apple's Writing Tool can provide spelling and grammatical assistance or change the tone of already written text, while ChatGPT can generate entirely new text from scratch based on simple prompts. ImagePlayground and Genmoji can create cartoon images and custom emojis, while ChatGPT's image generation capabilities are able to generate more realistic images.

Siri will utilize the latest GPT-4o model, and ChatGPT integration will be available free of charge, requiring no account creation from users. Apple and OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests from Apple devices, and users' IP addresses will be masked, ensuring user privacy is protected.

In addition to ChatGPT integration, AppleIntelligence includes a feature called VisualIntelligence designed specifically for the iPhone 16. By utilizing the camera control button, users can point their camera at surrounding objects or locations, and the iPhone will provide information about what is being viewed when the camera control button is held down.

iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 are expected to be released on Monday, October 28th. We can expect to receive the first beta versions of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 shortly after. If the testing process aligns with other .2 updates, these releases should be officially made available sometime in December.

In addition to ChatGPT and VisualIntelligence, iOS 18.2 will also include support for ImagePlayground image generation capabilities, Genmoji, and ImageWand. ImageWand is a Notes app feature for generating images from text or basic drawings.
