iPhone 16 Series Sees Strong Sales in China, but Overall Market Share Still Declines
Latest figures show that iPhone 16 series sales in China were 20% higher in the first three weeks compared to the iPhone 15 in 2023. Nevertheless, Counterpoint Research claims that the overall sales performance of the iPhone 16 is not ideal. Despite this, the news is positive as sales for the entire series so far in China have outperformed its predecessor, which itself exceeded expectations upon its launch in 2023.
According to Reuters, the iPhone 16 series saw an uptick in sales despite the release of new smartphones from local competitor Huawei during the same period. While overall iPhone 16 sales saw a 20% year-on-year growth, similar trends were seen in the U.S. market, with Pro models performing better. Sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max combined grew 44% compared to their 2023 predecessors.
It is noteworthy that despite the strong performance of the iPhone 16 series in China's market, overall iPhone sales for Apple in China have declined by 2% year-on-year. This is attributed to both competition from Huawei and a drop in sales of older iPhone models. The latter is likely due to older models lacking support for future AppleIntelligence, which specifically requires either the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or the iPhone 16 series to function.
Previously, analysts including JPMorgan had forecast an improvement in Apple's sales in China after experiencing several quarters of decline. However, the strong initial launch of the iPhone 15 series in China saw a significant dip in sales just months later.
While exceeding expectations in China, the decline in overall market share for the iPhone 16 series remains a concern. Apple needs to further analyze market trends and develop effective marketing strategies to enhance its competitiveness in China's market.
