Apple Software Chief Explains the Phased Rollout of Apple Intelligence: Ensuring Functionality and Privacy First
Apple's software chief, Craig Federighi, recently explained the phased rollout of the Apple Intelligence feature in an interview. He stated that Apple prefers to ensure that each feature is polished before release to avoid confusion. Therefore, the initial version will focus on basic functionalities such as text summarization, notification summaries, and cleanup tools for removing unwanted objects from images.
Unlike other large language models that process user queries on cloud servers, Apple has adopted a more personalized and privacy-focused approach. This also explains why Siri cannot provide answers similar to ChatGPT. Federighi believes that while ChatGPT excels at answering complex questions, it cannot perform tasks like opening a garage door or sending text messages.
According to the plan, iOS 18.2 is expected to be released by the end of the year, introducing features like ImagePlayground for generating cartoon-style images and Genmoji for creating custom emojis. The most significant Siri enhancements are planned for release in iOS 18.4 around March 2025.
When discussing the rollout of Apple Intelligence, Federighi emphasized that it's a multi-year, if not multi-decade, technological evolution, and Apple will approach it responsibly.
It's worth noting that during Apple CEO Tim Cook's visit to Sina headquarters today, someone inquired about the launch of Apple Intelligence in China. Cook responded that Apple is working hard on it, but due to regulatory processes, they need to complete these steps and hope to bring it to Chinese consumers soon.
