Apple Mail App Gets a Major Update: New Mail Classification Feature
Apple has introduced a significant design overhaul to its Mail app in the first Beta update of iOS/iPadOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2 Sequoia. This update introduces a brand-new mail classification feature, designed to help users manage their emails more effortlessly through intelligent categorization, enhancing email management efficiency.
The new Mail app categorizes emails into four main categories. Besides the traditional "Important" "Primary" category there are three new categories:
- Transactions: Includes receipts, orders, and delivery information, making it easier for users to find their past orders and their shipping details.
- Updates: Includes newsletters, doctor appointment reminders, and other subscription emails.
- Promotions: Includes special offers and deals.
Apple states that this mail classification feature mainly relies on Apple Intelligence technology. However, this feature is still in its testing phase, meaning there might be instances of misclassified emails or emails appearing in multiple categories. To help users understand how their mail is being categorized, the new Mail app includes a "About Categories" section, allowing users to review their email classification over the past week. Unfortunately, users are currently unable to provide feedback on misclassifications.
The new mail classification feature is undoubtedly a significant update to Apple's Mail app. It categorizes emails based on their nature, allowing users to more intuitively understand the content of their emails and quickly find the ones they need. While the feature is still under development and has some shortcomings, its potential is immense, promising a more convenient and efficient email management experience for users.
