Starlink Terminals Sell Out in Nigeria and Zimbabwe, Demand Soars in African Market
On October 25th, Nigeria and Zimbabwe became the only two African countries where SpaceX's Starlink terminals have sold out, with terminals running out of stock in several cities amid soaring demand. Less than two months ago, Elon Musk-led SpaceX received permission to operate its Starlink satellite internet service in Zimbabwe. Now, Starlink terminals in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare, have been completely sold out.
According to a map on the Starlink website, five cities in Nigeria - Abuja, Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri - have also sold out. Starlink states that this means local consumers cannot order new terminals as "service is not available in the area."
Demand for Starlink service in Zimbabwe has surged since it received local operating permission in early September. Consumers can now order terminals directly from its website, bypassing a once-thriving "black market" on the roadside. This street market, which sold Starlink terminals at inflated prices to consumers, has now collapsed.
Meanwhile, local internet service providers in Zimbabwe are offering price cuts to retain customers, facing competition from the entry of Starlink service in the market. Starlink, which began deployment in 2019, currently boasts 5,500 satellites providing broadband service to over 2.6 million customers globally.
