Latest data released by market research firm Counterpoint Research shows that China's smartphone sales grew 2.3% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2024, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth and putting it on track for its first annual growth in five years. vivo reclaimed the top spot with a 19.2% market share, followed by Huawei (16.4%) and Xiaomi (15.6%).
vivo continued to maintain its lead thanks to its diverse product portfolio and popular models across different price segments. Huawei showcased a strong rebound in the third quarter, recording a 30% year-on-year growth, driven by the strong performance of the Pura70 and Mate60 series, demonstrating its continued strong influence in China's high-end market. Xiaomi solidified its third-place position through the success of its high-end Redmi K series and flagship Mi series, along with the newly launched K70 Ultra model. The K70 Ultra fully embodies Xiaomi's "high configuration at low prices" strategy, gaining market recognition.
Following closely behind are Honor (15.3%), OPPO (14.7%), and Apple (13.5%).
Another market research firm, Canalys, also reported that the mainland China smartphone market continued its rebound in the third quarter, seeing a 4% year-on-year increase in shipments to 69.1 million units. The summer holidays and back-to-school purchase season were major drivers of market growth.
Notably, over 70% of iPhone 16 series sales by October 8th were accounted for by Pro and Pro Max models, indicating a continued strong demand for high-end models.
Overall, the Chinese smartphone market, after years of sluggishness, is finally experiencing a resurgence. Competition among brands is intensifying, with new products and technologies emerging constantly, which will further drive market development.
