OPPO and InterDigital Reach Global Patent License Agreement, Ending All Litigation Disputes

IT Home, October 29 - OPPO today announced that it has signed a global patent license agreement with U.S. technology company InterDigital, covering InterDigital's cellular network, HEVC video, and WiFi patents. Under the agreement, the two parties will drop all pending lawsuits in all jurisdictions worldwide.

OPPO and InterDigital Reach Global Patent License Agreement, Ending All Litigation Disputes

The agreement marks the official end of the patent dispute between OPPO and InterDigital. As early as 2021, InterDigital had filed patent infringement lawsuits against OPPO, OnePlus, and realme in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Germany, involving patents related to 3G, 4G, 5G, and HEVC standards. In all lawsuits, InterDigital sought injunctions.

InterDigital is one of the two major wireless network technology patent holders in the United States and has long generated revenue by developing wireless technologies and then licensing patents. The company is known for its strong patent licensing strategy and litigation tactics, having previously used lawsuits to force mobile phone companies to accept its patent fees.

With the signing of this agreement, OPPO has become the latest Chinese smartphone manufacturer, after Huawei and Xiaomi, to reach a global patent licensing agreement with InterDigital, completely ending its patent dispute with the company.

It is worth noting that OPPO has been increasing its investment in the patent field in recent years. As of September 30, 2024, OPPO has filed over 105,000 patent applications globally, with over 59,000 granted, of which invention patents account for 91% of all patent applications. OPPO's patent strength has also been recognized internationally. In the 2023 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranking of the number of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications filed, OPPO ranked ninth globally, marking the fifth consecutive year that OPPO has ranked among the top 10.

In addition to the patent dispute with InterDigital, OPPO has also engaged in patent litigation and negotiations with several companies in recent years, including Sharp, Nokia, and Ericsson. Ultimately, OPPO concluded patent cross-licensing agreements or collaborations through negotiations and litigation with these companies, ending related patent lawsuits and disputes.

The patent license agreement reached between OPPO and InterDigital marks a new breakthrough for OPPO in the patent field and reflects OPPO's competitiveness in the global technology sector. In the future, OPPO will continue to increase its investment in the patent field to drive its own development with stronger patent capabilities and contribute more to global technological progress.
