A recent report by Counterpoint Research reveals that India's smartphone shipments grew by 3% year-on-year in Q3 2024 (July-September), while shipments value increased by 12%, reaching a historic high. The report provides a deep dive into the performance of various brands in terms of shipments and value, highlighting the latest trends in the Indian smartphone market.

I. Shipments: vivo Reclaims Top Spot, Xiaomi Close Behind

In terms of shipments, vivo reclaimed the top spot in India's smartphone market with a 19.4% share, driven by its diverse product portfolio and successful expansion of its T series, which saw a 26% YoY growth. Xiaomi, through its balanced online and offline channel strategy, saw a 3% YoY growth in shipments, securing second place with a 16.7% share. Samsung followed closely in third place with a 15.8% share. OPPO emerged as the fastest-growing brand among the top five, achieving a 41% YoY growth. realme rounded out the top five with an 11.3% market share.

II. Value: Samsung Leads with its Galaxy Series, Apple Close Behind

In terms of shipment value, Samsung captured a 23% market share, driven by its flagship Galaxy S series and value-driven portfolio. Samsung also integrated Galaxy AI features into its mid-premium and premium A-series models, encouraging consumers to upgrade to higher price segments. Apple followed Samsung in second place with a 22% value share. The brand saw significant value growth driven by its focus on expanding into smaller cities and the launch of its new iPhones. Strong shipments of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 further solidified Apple's performance in the pre-festive season. As consumers increasingly invest in high-end smartphones, Apple has solidified its position as the preferred choice for premium buyers in India, thanks to its aspirational image and expanding market footprint.

III. Other Brand Performances

Nothing emerged as the fastest-growing brand for the third consecutive quarter, achieving an impressive 510% YoY growth in shipments in Q3 2024, securing a spot in the top ten for the first time.

Motorola witnessed an 87% YoY growth in Q3 2024, driven by the success of its affordable models focused on CMF (color, material, and finish), rising demand in smaller cities, and expanded market footprint.

5G smartphones reached a record high of 81% share in overall shipments, demonstrating the rapid adoption of 5G technology in the Indian market.

MediaTek dominated the Indian smartphone chipset market with a 54% share. Apple secured the top spot in the premium segment with a 35% share, followed by Qualcomm with a 28% share.
