Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple plans to release an upgraded version of its VisionPro headset in 2025. This new headset is expected to be equipped with the yet-to-be-announced M5 chip, whereas the current VisionPro features the M2 chip released in 2022. Reports indicate that Apple has been developing the M5 chip since 2023, alongside the A19Pro chip, and it is expected to be manufactured on TSMC's 3nm process, potentially debuting sometime between the second half of next year and the end of the year.
Kuo did not disclose whether the upgraded VisionPro will see any improvements in features or design. However, he mentioned that Apple has postponed production plans for a cheaper version of the VisionPro, pushing the new timeline beyond 2027.
Prominent leaker Mark Gurman has also discussed Apple's future plans for the Vision series, aligning with Kuo's views. He indicates that Apple indeed plans to upgrade the VisionPro with a new chip, although he did not specify whether this would happen in 2025. Additionally, Gurman mentioned that Apple is developing a "simplified technology version" of the VisionPro headset at a lower price point but similarly did not reveal a concrete release date.
Gurman further added that Apple is considering launching a device that offloads computing components to the iPhone, serving as a viewing aid similar to smart glasses offered by other companies (like Xreal). Such a product would further solidify the iPhone's core position within the Apple ecosystem and could potentially be more appealing than the $3,500 VisionPro.
While specific details about the upgraded VisionPro headset remain unclear, Apple is evidently actively exploring and expanding its presence in the augmented reality and virtual reality space. Whether it's incorporating the more powerful M5 chip or introducing a more affordable version, Apple aims to attract a wider user base and propel the Vision series towards a broader market.
