China's Smartphone Market Rebounds, HarmonyOS Share Continues to Rise
The Chinese smartphone market showed strong signs of recovery in the third quarter. According to a recent report by TechInsights, China remains the world's largest single smartphone market, with shipments reaching 65.7 million units, up 3% year-on-year. This marks the third consecutive quarter of growth.
In terms of operating system market share, Apple iOS held steady at 15% in China, consistent with the same period last year. Android's market share experienced a slight decline, dropping from 72% to 70% year-over-year. This shift can be attributed to the rise of Huawei's HarmonyOS, whose market share increased from 13% to 15%, gradually eroding Android's dominance.
Notably, Huawei launched HarmonyOSNEXT, China's first domestically-developed mobile operating system, in October. The company also announced discontinuing support for Android applications. This move signifies Huawei's achievement of independent control in the operating system domain, injecting new vitality into China's smartphone market.
Huawei has invested a decade in operating system research and development, eventually achieving a breakthrough and achieving a milestone that took Western counterparts 30 years to achieve. The launch of HarmonyOS makes China the third major market globally to possess an independent operating system, following Apple iOS and Android, with the potential to become a tripartite force in the future.
On the ecosystem front, HarmonyOS native applications and services have fully covered 18 vertical domains, meeting 99.9% of user usage time. As of October 20, over 15,000 HarmonyOS native applications and metaservices have been launched, providing users with a diverse range of application experiences.
The rise of HarmonyOS represents not only Huawei's breakthrough but also significant progress in China's operating system field. It lays a solid foundation for the autonomous development of China's tech industry. As the HarmonyOS ecosystem continues to mature, the Chinese smartphone market will become increasingly diversified, offering users more choices and richer experiences.
