Apple recently released a document outlining a series of measures the company will implement to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). According to the document, Apple plans to introduce iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 updates in April 2025, allowing users in the European Union to set default navigation and translation apps on their iPhones and iPads.
Previously, iPhone users in the EU had the option to change the default apps for various services, including web browsers, email clients, app stores, phone and messaging apps, password managers, call filtering, and software keyboards. This update further expands user choice, enabling them to select Google Maps, Waze, or other apps as their default navigation app in the device's settings, replacing the default Apple Maps.
Similarly, users can choose platforms like Google Translate or Microsoft Translator as their default translation app. This signifies that users can leverage their preferred or more familiar applications for mapping and language translation, instead of being restricted to the default options offered by Apple.
The EU Digital Markets Act aims to foster market competition and prevent large tech companies from exploiting their market dominance. The Act mandates that tech giants, including Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta, undertake several measures to enhance competition. These include allowing users to choose default applications, prohibiting pre-installation of their own apps and services, and limiting data collection.
Apple has consistently sought to align with the requirements of the EU Digital Markets Act. This update, empowering users with more flexibility in selecting default apps, not only enhances user experience but also promotes market competition, offering users greater choice and adaptability.
It's noteworthy that the update is scheduled for April 2025, leaving some time before its implementation. It will be crucial to observe the future measures Apple adopts to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act and their impact on user experience.
