Tech media outlet AndroidAuthority published a blog post today (November 9th) stating that Google has implemented a True Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR) feature in Android 15. This will allow the screen refresh rate to dynamically adjust based on the content displayed, effectively reducing power consumption and stutter.
Currently, most Android phones support refresh rates exceeding 60Hz. However, for phones without Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology, they are usually limited to switching between fixed refresh rates like 60Hz, 90Hz, or 120Hz. Android 15's ARR feature is different. It allows the refresh rate to not only adapt to the content frame rate but also change within a single display mode, making it the first Android version to truly support adaptive refresh rate.
Google states that there are two main benefits of the Adaptive Refresh Rate feature in Android 15:
- Reduced Power Consumption: The feature allows devices to operate at a rate below their maximum refresh rate, transitioning to higher rates only when essential for the user experience, minimizing unnecessary power drain.
- Enhanced Performance: Adaptive Refresh Rate improves performance by eliminating the need to change display modes. Google states that changing display modes is a known cause of stutter.
This feature will enhance the user experience when watching videos or playing games on their phones. Users can enjoy smoother visuals without worrying about rapid battery depletion.
Although many phone manufacturers have long touted Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), the Android system never truly supported this technology before. Previous devices, even those equipped with LTPO displays, still relied on discrete modes for refresh rate switching. Android 15's ARR feature provides a unified method for devices to adjust refresh rates within the same display mode, improving energy efficiency.
The introduction of this feature marks a significant step forward in performance optimization for the Android system. With the official release of Android 15, more phones are expected to support this feature, providing users with a smoother and more power-efficient experience.
