Google recognizes the issues with its Tensor chip, especially regarding overheating and battery life, and is working to address them with the upcoming Tensor G6, codenamed "Malibu." According to leaked slides from AndroidAuthority, overheating is the leading reason behind returns for Tensor-powered Pixel phones, with almost 28% of complaints being related to their heat generation.
Google aims to lower the phone's temperature, and one way to achieve this is by utilizing the "cinematic rendering engine" in Tensor G6. This new engine will reduce power consumption by roughly 40% when recording blurry videos, ultimately leading to less heat generation.
Battery life is another key focus. Slides reveal that fewer than 86% of Pixel 6 and 7 users manage to get through a whole day on a single charge. While Google hasn't explicitly stated how Pixel 11 with G6 will improve battery life, it's definitely on the agenda.
To achieve these goals, Google has adopted TSMC's N3P process node, shrinking the size of G6 to approximately 105 square millimeters. To accommodate the smaller size, certain sacrifices have been made, including removing one kernel from the DSP and halving the system-level cache.
The company has also repurposed the three-core IMGCXTGPU originally used in the older Tensor G4, which helps reduce chip area by about 12% but comes with some performance limitations.
Concerning the CPU, Tensor G6 is likely to feature one Cortex-X930 core and six Cortex-A730 cores, with minor adjustments to several of these cores for speed improvements. Meanwhile, Google decided to forgo the smaller Cortex-A5xx cores to maintain a simpler structure. However, fewer cores mean G6 might not see a significant speed boost compared to G5.
Overall, Tensor G6 is designed to address the shortcomings of existing Tensor chips, enhancing Pixel phone performance and user experience. While Google hasn't yet unveiled detailed specifications and performance test results for G6, these changes indicate their commitment to refining the overall Pixel phone experience, delivering a smoother and more enduring experience for users.
