In recent years, Samsung's foundry business has been struggling, with its 3nm process yield issues being particularly prominent. Samsung's 3nm process introduced the GAA (Gate-All-Around) transistor technology for the first time, with two versions: 3GAE (generation 1) and 3GAP (generation 2). The internal target for mass production yield was set at 70%, but the first-generation 3GAE currently achieves only 50-60% and has not yet entered large-scale production. The second-generation 3GAP is even worse, with a yield rate of only 20%, meaning only one chip out of every five produced is functional.
This has eroded customer trust in Samsung's 3nm process. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy has completely switched to TSMC's N3E 3nm process for production, and several Korean domestic companies have also moved to TSMC.
Samsung faces immense pressure from TSMC. To salvage the situation, Samsung is actively improving its 3nm process while simultaneously pushing forward with its 2nm process development. Reportedly, Samsung plans to launch its Exynos processor with a 2nm process in 2027, code-named Ulysses, for the Galaxy S27 series.
Whether Samsung can turn the tide with its 2nm process and revive its foundry business remains to be seen. Currently, the difficulties with Samsung's 3nm process have already significantly impacted its own business and have also raised supply chain security concerns for customers in mainland China.
