iFixit has started offering repair parts for Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold foldable phone, but shockingly, replacing the screen on this device costs more than buying a brand new, non-foldable phone.
The inner screen assembly, including the frame, hinge, side buttons, and the OLED screen itself, carries a parts cost of a staggering $1199. When combined with the repair tool kit offered by iFixit, the total cost reaches $1207.
In comparison, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1799, making it one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. While iFixit's inner screen replacement cost for last year's Pixel Fold was a hefty $899, the significantly higher price for the new model is astounding.
The $1199 price tag is equivalent to the cost of an iPhone 16 Pro Max and even more expensive than a 13-inch M3 MacBook Air ($1099). For DIY repair, it's an immense financial burden.
Beyond the inner screen, iFixit also offers other components for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, including the outer screen ($190), rear camera ($250), inner screen front camera ($90), outer screen front camera ($80), and battery ($67).
Following the launch of repair parts for the rest of the Pixel 9 Pro series in September, iFixit now provides components for the entire lineup.
