Google is bolstering its malware detection capabilities to combat increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The Google Play Protect service on Android has received an update called "Real-Time Threat Detection," which analyzes app behavior to identify potentially harmful apps in real time and alerts users when suspicious activity is detected.

This update, first announced at this year's Google I/O conference, is currently available for Pixel 6 and newer devices. It will be rolled out to other Android phones from brands including Lenovo, OnePlus, Nothing, and OPPO in the coming months.

"Real-Time Threat Detection" specifically targets hard-to-detect malicious apps. Play Protect doesn't just scan apps for malware when they are downloaded; it continuously monitors their behavior on the phone to identify potential malicious activity. This detection process occurs on the device and leverages Android's privacy-preserving on-device AI to safeguard user data. Users will receive real-time alerts when necessary.

In addition to "Real-Time Threat Detection," Google has introduced another security feature: Scam Call Detection. Also announced at I/O, this feature uses on-device AI to analyze incoming calls and identify potential scams. If it detects suspicious conversation patterns or typical scam attempts, the system will alert users and suggest they hang up.

Currently, this feature is available only to users of the Google Phone app beta on Pixel 6 and newer phones. It will be expanded to more Android phones in the future.

The introduction of these two features demonstrates Google's commitment to strengthening Android's security defenses and providing users with a safer mobile experience. As cyber threats continue to evolve, Google will continue to invest in research and development to enhance its security system and deliver a safer, more convenient mobile experience for its users.
