In-Depth Review of the vivo Y300: A Perfect Blend of 6500mAh Battery and Stunning Tri-Speaker Audio
Unexpectedly, the most impressive innovations in the 2024 smartphone market have emerged in the mid-range segment. The Honor X60 Pro's satellite communication capabilities, the K12 Plus's enhanced gaming battery life, and the vivo Y300 Pro's ultra-long 6500mAh battery and flagship-level micro-curved glass design have all injected vitality into the mid-range market. And just as the year was ending, when many believed the mid-range innovation battle was concluding, the standard vivo Y300 surprised us all. What makes this phone so captivating? Let's delve deeper.
"Thanos"-esque Design: Y300's Legacy and Innovation
Three months ago, the vivo Y300 Pro's "above-class" design made a strong impression, with its eye-catching, centrally positioned large circular camera module. The standard Y300 inherits this design philosophy but adopts a more porthole-style decorative approach, similar to the iQOO Z9 series. (Image source: Lei Technology)
To reduce the protrusion of the rear camera module, the designers cleverly employed a three-layered design: an outer layer with a common decorative nail texture, a middle layer of a glass decorative strip, and the innermost layer housing the camera module itself. This design creates a smoother, more natural transition and makes the Y300 the most comfortable to hold among similarly sized modules that I've experienced this year.
Color options include Pine Green, Snow White, and Starry Black. The Snow White version reviewed here features a glossy organic material back panel that displays a subtle texture in sunlight. Coupled with the currently trendy straight-edged frame and gold accents, the overall visual effect is quite premium. However, it's important to note that this premium feel is primarily visual; the plastic build noticeably differs in tactile experience from metal or glass.
On the front, the 6.77-inch OLED screen (23921080 resolution, 387PPI) presents a distinct "retro" feel. To enhance durability, the Y300 retains a screen bezel design. While vivo has tried to minimize the abruptness of the transition between the screen and the frame, the relatively large bezel still impacts the grip. (Image source: Lei Technology)
The screen's color reproduction is decent, and its brightness adjustment is responsive, quickly adapting to various lighting conditions. It also supports 3840Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, although the comfort level is slightly inferior to the X200 series. Overall, the vivo Y300 maintains good grip, standing out in the thousand-yuan price range. However, the screen bezel is a drawback to its front visual experience. Additionally, at 199g, it's not the lightest or thinnest even among comparable large-battery phones.
vivo Y300: A Portable Sound System
In the design section, we didn't fully detail the prominent Hi-Res 3DAudio logo at the center of the rear camera module. This is one of the core highlights of the vivo Y300: its tri-speaker stereo sound system.
Unlike typical symmetrical dual-speaker designs, the vivo Y300 features speaker units on the front, bottom, and back, forming a tri-speaker stereo system. The rear speaker unit is a new 2613D sound unit jointly customized by vivo and AAC Technologies. Its volume is approximately 3.75 times that of the common 1511E unit found in flagship phones, reaching 1222mm. This is typically found in larger devices like laptops. (Image source: Lei Technology)
To fully leverage the high output of the 2613D sound unit, the vivo Y300 supports a 600% volume mode. After reaching 100% volume, each press of the volume up button doubles the volume, up to six levels of volume enhancement. Official data indicates that at the maximum 600% volume, the sound can travel up to 100 meters.
Based on these specifications, the vivo Y300's speaker configuration is among the best in recent smartphone history. But how does it perform in real-world use? At 100% volume, using BlitzKids' "On My Own" for testing, the Y300 clearly reproduced the powerful drumbeat, with good separation between vocals and instruments, and satisfying high-note performance. (Image source: Lei Technology)
At 200% to 400% volume, even with a 2 to 4 times volume increase, the Y300 maintained sound balance. However, at 500% or 600%, the device vibrated noticeably as the sound unit cavity exceeded the phone's tolerance. Therefore, I recommend using 500% and above volume only for emergencies, such as answering urgent calls.
The tri-speaker system isn't limited to music. Thanks to tuning from vivo's Golden Ears Acoustics Lab, the Y300 provides an excellent surround sound experience for watching videos, particularly in action films or sound-rich thrillers, delivering a noticeably better listening experience than typical stereo speakers. Furthermore, the rear speaker design prevents obstruction when holding the phone during gaming or watching videos. (Image source: Lei Technology)
The vivo Y300 functions as a small speaker in most situations with ample volume and good sound quality at lower volume levels. Beyond outstanding sound quality, the extraordinarily loud volume is practical in specific work environments, such as for delivery drivers or construction workers who might struggle to hear their phones in noisy settings.
Large Battery + Dimensity Chip: A Durable Upgrade for the Y Series
Like its predecessors, the vivo Y300 uses a balanced processor and ultra-large battery combination for relatively even power consumption. It features the Dimensity 6300 mobile platform, consisting of two 2.4GHz A76 cores and six 2.0GHz A55 cores, with performance similar to the Y200i. Antutu benchmark scores are approximately 460,000, with GeekBench 6 single-core scores around 750 and multi-core scores around 1875.
OriginOS 5's optimization allows the Y300 to run smoothly in daily scenarios like WeChat chatting, browsing short videos, and watching videos, but animation effects are simplified and real-time blurring is not available on the Y series, which is a slight disappointment. (Image source: Lei Technology)
- In MOBA games like Honor of Kings, the Y300 runs stably at 60 frames, with frame rates only dropping to 58 during large-scale team battles, demonstrating good stability. (Image source: Lei Technology) However, considering that the Dimensity 6300 is a mid-range chip, I wouldn't recommend using the Y300 for high-performance open-world games.
In terms of photography, the Y300 has a 50-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel bokeh lens. The main camera sensor is 1/2.76 inches with an F1.8 aperture. In actual use, the Y300's image quality is sufficient for daily shooting in daylight, with fast capture speeds, but zoom beyond 1x lacks algorithmic optimization and produces average results. (Image source: Lei Technology)
In daylight scenarios, the Y300's main camera performs adequately. For example, the sample image of sunlight on a white wall shows good handling of light and shadow, resulting in a clear and natural image. However, closer inspection in darker areas reveals noticeable noise. (Image source: Lei Technology)
The Y300 offers a 2x digital zoom, but without ISZ zoom algorithm, resulting in significant image quality loss in 2x zoom mode. (Image source: Lei Technology) Overall, the Y300 functions reasonably as a tool for casual daily photography.
- In terms of battery life, the vivo Y300 uses the same 6500mAh large-capacity blue-ocean battery as the Y300 Pro, with an energy density of 776Wh/L, adding almost the equivalent of a Watch GT's battery capacity in a similar-sized body. One hour of social media browsing consumes about 5% battery, and one hour of Honor of Kings consumes about 9%. Even after an hour each of social media, gaming, video streaming, and video recording, the battery still remains above 75%. However, the 44W wired fast charging speed is somewhat lacking, taking more than an hour and a half to fully charge from 1% to 100%, needing improvement in user experience. (Image source: Lei Technology)
Finally, regarding OriginOS 5, some features on the vivo Y300 are simplified. For example, the Jovi assistant cannot be activated via the navigation bar, and system animations are reduced. However, most popular AI features like Jovi's circle search remain available.
