On December 18th, MediaTek officially announced the launch date of the Dimensity 8400 chip, signaling a new wave of fierce competition in the mid-range smartphone market. However, what is the actual performance of the Dimensity 8400? Can it stand out in a fiercely competitive market, and even surpass previous generations of flagship processors? This article will delve into the performance metrics of the Dimensity 8400 and discuss its market prospects and MediaTek's future strategy.

The Dimensity 8400 is built using TSMC's 4nm process. Considering the cost constraints of mid-range processors, a more advanced 3nm process is not feasible. Nevertheless, compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300, the Dimensity 8400 has achieved significant improvements in both performance and power consumption.

Its CPU architecture adopts the same scheme as the flagship Dimensity 9400, consisting of one ultra-large core A725 clocked at up to 3.25GHz, three large cores A725 at 3.0GHz, and four high-efficiency cores A725 at 2.1GHz. This is the first time an eight-large-core architecture has been used in a mid-range processor. According to ARM's official data, the theoretical performance of the A725 ultra-large core is approximately 35% higher than the A720. However, since the Dimensity 8400 uses a 4nm process, rather than the more advanced 3nm architecture used in A725 core testing, the actual single-core performance improvement may be lower, estimated around 20%.

Thanks to the all-large-core architecture, the multi-core performance improvement of the Dimensity 8400 is particularly significant. Referring to the similarly architectured Dimensity 9400 and Dimensity 9300, the Dimensity 9400's multi-core performance improvement is approximately 60%, making it the preferred chip for many flagship phones. The Dimensity 8400's multi-core performance improvement is expected to be between 40% and 50%.

On the GPU side, the Dimensity 8400 features the Immortalis-G720 MC7 architecture with a clock speed of up to 1.3GHz. Compared to the previous generation G615, its core count, architecture, and scale have all been improved. While the actual performance improvement may not be very significant, thanks to the new architecture and lower frequency, power consumption will be significantly reduced.

In summary, the theoretical performance of the Dimensity 8400 is very close to MediaTek's previous generation flagship chip, the Dimensity 9300, slightly inferior to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but this aligns with the mid-range market positioning of the Dimensity 8 series. Another significant advantage of the Dimensity 8400 is its power efficiency. Rumours suggest its power consumption is reduced by nearly 40% compared to the Dimensity 8300, which, combined with the large batteries now commonly found in phones, will lead to a significant improvement in battery life.

Market Positioning and Competitive Pressure

MediaTek Dimensity 8400: Can This Mid-Range Chip Reshape the Market Landscape?

Judging from the product name, the Dimensity 8400's target market remains the RMB 2000 to 3000 price range. Its performance is sufficient to meet the various usage needs of mid-range smartphones. However, in recent years, high-performance processors have become standard in mid-range phones, making it difficult for MediaTek to increase its market share with a low-price, high-performance strategy.

Taking the recently released Redmi K80, Honor GT, and Realme GT Neo7 as examples, the three phones are priced around RMB 2300 but use last year's flagship processors, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Dimensity 9300+, which outperform the Dimensity 8400. Furthermore, smartphone manufacturers also have mature tuning schemes for last year's flagship processors, which challenges the Dimensity 8400's competitiveness in this price segment.

Although MediaTek maintained its leading position with a 38% market share in Q3 2024, its shipments decreased by 4% year-on-year, while Qualcomm saw a 4% year-on-year increase, raising its market share to 24%. This indicates significant pressure on the Dimensity 8400.

Potential Market and Pricing Strategy

If the Dimensity 8400 lowers its price to the RMB 1500 to 2000 range, it could capture a larger market share. The Redmi Turbo 4, the first confirmed device to feature the Dimensity 8400, has specifications including a 6500mAh battery, a 1.5K ultra-narrow bezel eye-protection straight screen, a 50-megapixel dual-camera rear module, and a short-focus optical fingerprint module. Considering the Turbo series' pricing strategy, the phone with the Dimensity 8400 might be priced around RMB 1600. For consumers, getting near-flagship performance at RMB 1600 is undoubtedly highly attractive.

Qualcomm has paid relatively less attention to the mid-range and entry-level markets in recent years, and the updates to the Snapdragon 7 series and Snapdragon 6 series haven't caused much of a stir. This presents an opportunity for MediaTek.

MediaTek's Strategic Reflection and Future Outlook

In the past few years, MediaTek achieved significant success with chips like the Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 8000, but subsequent product iterations have been relatively conservative, lacking groundbreaking "game-changers." During the Dimensity 8200 era, MediaTek should have positioned it as a slightly cut-down near-flagship processor to gain a foothold in the mid-range market, but ultimately missed the opportunity.

To reshape the market landscape, MediaTek needs to improve in the following areas:

1. Maintain competitiveness in high-end flagship processors: The Dimensity 9400's performance is comparable to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. If next year's Dimensity 9500 achieves comprehensive upgrades, it will further enhance consumer recognition of the Dimensity brand.

2. Optimize product lines and naming conventions: Qualcomm's product lines are clear and straightforward, while MediaTek's product naming is relatively confusing, hindering consumer understanding.

3. Extend price reduction time: The price reduction of smartphones has been increasing in recent years, affecting consumers' perception of smartphones equipped with Dimensity flagship chips. MediaTek needs to cooperate with manufacturers to delay price reductions.

2025 will be a year of leaps and bounds in mobile processor technology, with process technology, energy efficiency, and AI capabilities all undergoing qualitative changes. We look forward to MediaTek launching more competitive products in 2025, engaging in more intense competition with Qualcomm, and providing consumers with more choices. CES 2025 is scheduled to open on January 7th, 2025, and we will be watching.
