The chat robot developed by OpenAI can automatically generate fluent language and become the fastest-growing web application in history just a few months after its release. This robot has scared educators, prompted lawmakers to consider regulating artificial intelligence, and caused major technology giants to compete.

But who is using it anyway?

The Pew Research Center conducted a survey among more than 10000 American adults in mid March this year, with the aim of better understanding who has heard of ChatGPT and who truly finds it useful.

A survey shows that approximately 58% of American adults are familiar with ChatGPT. The survey found that the more formal education a person receives, the more likely they are to understand ChatGPT. Nearly 80% of the respondents with graduate degrees have heard of "a lot" of ChatGPT information or at least heard of it; But among the respondents who obtained a university degree, this proportion decreased to 71%; Among respondents who only received some higher education, this proportion is even lower, at only 59%; Only 41% of respondents with a high school education indicate that they are familiar with ChatGPT.

76% of respondents from high-income families expressed familiarity with ChatGPT; Among respondents from middle-income families, the proportion of people who understand ChatGPT has decreased to 60%; In contrast, only 45% of respondents from low-income families are aware of ChatGPT.

The Pew Research Center's survey also showed how people use ChatGPT.

Only 14% of respondents stated that they use ChatGPT for entertainment, work, or learning new things.

A survey shows that approximately 19% of respondents who have heard of ChatGPT say they use this tool for entertainment purposes. Another 14% said they use ChatGPT to learn new things. Only about 12% of people use ChatGPT to complete work tasks.

In addition, the survey found that people from low-income families are more likely to fully use ChatGPT. Approximately 20% of respondents from low-income families use ChatGPT to complete work tasks, while 11% of respondents from mid to high income families.

The survey also shows that overall, slightly more than one-third of respondents who use ChatGPT believe that this tool is "extremely" useful or "very" useful. And another 39% of respondents believe that ChatGPT is just a bit useful.

Approximately 38% of respondents under the age of 50 who use ChatGPT believe that ChatGPT is "extremely" useful or "very" useful. However, only about a quarter of respondents over the age of 50 hold the same view. (Chen Chen)
