Google TensorG3 performs poorly, Pixel8 series phones are prohibited from installing performance testing software

IT Home reported on October 15th that Google has banned testers and users of Pixel8 and Pixel8Pro phones from installing popular performance testing software, including Geekbench and 3DMark, according to netizens.

Geekbench is a popular testing software for evaluating smartphone CPU performance, while 3DMark is a testing software for evaluating GPU performance. Running these testing software is a typical part of the evaluation process, and it is also the basis for the evaluator to form an overall evaluation of the equipment based on objective data and qualitative analysis based on actual usage.

Google emphasizes that the TensorG3 chip is designed with efficiency and artificial intelligence as its goals, rather than simply pursuing performance, indicating that the company is very aware of the relative shortcomings of the chip in terms of performance. Although some reviewers were prevented from installing these testing software through the Google App Store, some reviewers were still able to bypass this restriction through "sideloading". Therefore, the results of TensorG3 chips on Geekbench, 3DMark, and other testing software have been exposed, and these results show that their performance is very average.

IT Home noticed that one of the Geekbench6 results showed that the TensorG3 chip installed on the Pixel8Pro phone scored 1760 in a single core test and 4442 in a multi core test. This is far from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Gen2 chip, which scored 2003 in single core testing and 5427 in multi-core testing.

The ArmMali-G715GPU on the TensorG3 chip also showed similar performance deficiencies in the exposed 3DMarkWildLifeStress results. Recent efficiency tests also showed that the TensorG3 chip ranks lower in efficiency, comparable to older chips such as Snapdragon 888.

It is worth mentioning that Google has even extended this ban to new users of Pixel8 and Pixel8Pro phones, preventing them from installing testing software. As mentioned earlier, this will not prevent users from installing these testing software through side loading, but it will undoubtedly help reduce the dissemination of information about the performance and efficiency issues of Pixel8 and Pixel8Pro phones. However, Google seems to be just hiding its ears and stealing information.
