On October 20th, Japanese automaker Toyota announced on Thursday that they have signed an agreement to adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) technology starting from 2025.
Toyota is the world's best-selling automaker. Previously, manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, and Nissan had already adopted Tesla's NACS standard, which makes Tesla's NACS standard expected to become a standard for the entire industry, making it more likely to become an industry wide standard than the combined charging system (CCS) used by competitors.
Starting from 2025, Toyota will adopt NACS standard interfaces on certain pure electric vehicles under its Toyota and Lexus brands, including the new Toyota SUV manufactured in Kentucky, USA.
At that time, existing owners of Toyota and Lexus cars equipped with CCS standard interfaces will receive an adapter for charging using NACS standard charging stations.
Tesla's NACS charging system has been widely deployed. The US Department of Energy stated that approximately 60% of superchargers use the NACS standard.
