This time, Google unveiled four new devices: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 9 Fold. These devices are deeply integrated with AI, aiming to shift consumers' lukewarm attitude toward smartphones, offering a smarter and more convenient experience.

Google has interwoven AI deeply across the Pixel 9 series, bringing a fresh experience:

Challenging Samsung and Apple, Competing for Market Share

Google hopes to stake its claim in the fiercely competitive smartphone market, dominated by Samsung and Apple. Notably, Apple has announced AI features for its upcoming iPhones.

While Google's smartphone market share remains smaller, it has been growing in recent years. According to market research firm IDC, Google's smartphone market share in 2023 reached 4.6%, up from 3.6% a year ago.

Google's 'AI Bet'

Google is redefining the landscape through the generative AI chatbot and related features craze. In April, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the integration of the Android development teams with Pixel device and other hardware engineering teams, aiming to make products easier to integrate AI and enhance decision-making speed.

Furthermore, Google showcased the Pixel Watch 3 smartwatch and PixelBuds Pro 2 wireless earbuds, both debuting with Google's Tensor A1 chip. This chip is designed to enhance AI experiences and advanced audio processing, promising clearer call quality and reduced external noise for users.

Gemini: The Powerful AI Assistant

Google has deeply integrated the Gemini chatbot (formerly Bard) into the Android operating system, providing a new service called GeminiLive. This service enables smartphone users to engage in audio conversations with the chatbot, posing complex questions.

Starting today, Gemini subscribers can utilize this service. Google also grants a year of free premium AI plans to phone users, providing access to more features. Gemini will connect with new apps in the coming weeks, including calendar, task management, and expanded YouTube Music functionalities, making it a more useful companion.

Protecting User Data, Building Secure AI Experience

Google recognizes that these efforts will integrate AI more profoundly into users' private lives and states that it will protect user data by not sharing it with other companies and allowing users to control what information Gemini can access.

"We are committed to embedding AI into everything we do," emphasized Samir Samat, Google's Android ecosystem president, in a blog post. "For AI to be truly helpful, it should naturally integrate into our daily lives, and the best place to experience this shift is on your Android device."

Pricing and Availability

All new phones will be available for pre-order starting Tuesday. The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL will officially launch on August 22, with the remaining two models shipping on September 4. Google hinted that its AI features will roll out sooner than Apple's, which intends to add AI to its smartphones before the fall.

The Pixel 9 ProFold starts at $1799, while other Pixel phones range from $799 to $1099, depending on size and configuration.
