August 20 - US power developers added significantly more electricity generation capacity in the first half of this year to meet the growing electricity demand driven by data centers and artificial intelligence. This represents the largest increase in over two decades.

The latest report released Monday by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) revealed that US power developers added 20.2 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in the first half of the year, accounting for a 21% surge compared to the same period in 2023. Total growth is projected to reach 42.6 GW by year-end.

According to EIA data, solar power is expected to dominate annual new capacity additions for the rest of the year, accounting for nearly 60% of the projected increase. New solar projects alone are anticipated to contribute 37 GW of generation capacity this year. The surging demand for electricity from data centers and the ongoing shift towards electrification have created a pressing need for additional power generation. The EIA anticipates that a substantial portion of the new supply will originate from carbon-free sources, including solar and battery storage.

However, the rising energy demand has also led to a slowdown in the retirement of coal and natural gas power plants. The EIA reports that retirements of these facilities in the first half of 2024 were 45% lower compared to the same period last year. This signifies a decrease in the pace of retirement for traditional energy sources, potentially reflecting a tension between increasing energy demand and the pace of carbon-free power development.
