A recent bug has been discovered in iOS and iPadOS, resulting in a brief, inconsequential crash when a specific string of characters is typed into certain search fields. The security researcher reported on August 21, 2024, that typing the characters ":::" in the search bar within the Settings app, or the app library search bar on the home screen, causes Apple's mobile interface, Springboard, to momentarily crash. Subsequently, the device quickly reloads, returning the user to the lock screen.

Testing has shown that typing these characters does indeed lead to a quick crash, resulting in the "Settings" app closing and Spotlight search returning to the home screen. However, the bug does not cause any lasting negative effects. We tested this across iPhones and iPads running the latest iOS 18.1 developer beta, as well as iPhones and iPads running iOS 17.6.1. Interestingly, we observed that some users reported crashes only in "Settings" and Spotlight search, while others found the app library also experienced crashes. The cause of the crash appears to vary across devices with different OS versions.

The security researcher, Konstantin, first shared the news via X. Currently, the bug remains unpatched, but it's worth noting that it's not a serious issue. Users can simply avoid typing these specific characters in the search bar of the "Settings" app or the "App Library" on their iPhones or iPads to prevent the issue.

Apple has been made aware of the bug and is expected to fix it in an upcoming software update.
