The Return of the Compact Flagship: OPPO Find X8 mini Could Be the First "True Compact Flagship" of Next Year
Last month, the launch of the Xiaomi 15 and vivo X200 Promini, two compact flagship phones, sparked interest with their compact straight-screen design, ultra-thin bodies, and performance on par with their Pro counterparts. Recently, digital blogger @DigitalChatStation revealed that more compact devices are expected in the coming year. OPPO and OnePlus are set to introduce new flagship compact phones with straight screens, and even sub-brands might join the trend later.
Concerning tablet-type products, there are two confirmed versions with 8-9 inch screens, powered by the Dimensity 9400/Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Images from offline events suggest OPPO will release the Find X8 Ultra and Find X Next in the spring of next year. The Find X Next is speculated to be the Find X8 mini, positioned as a "true compact flagship" device.
As a reference, the standard OPPO Find X8 boasts a 7.85mm thickness and 193g weight, featuring a 6.59-inch 1.5K straight screen with 1.45mm narrow bezels. It boasts a peak brightness of 4500 nits, supports a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and implements eye protection features like a dark mode, hardware-level low blue light, and high-frequency PWM.
According to the same blogger, the Find X8 mini may feature a 6.3-inch 1.5K compact straight screen, with an even thinner and lighter body, while maintaining a good display quality. The entire Find X8 series is expected to feature the Dimensity 9400 chip paired with the Tian Gong cooling system, suggesting the Find X8 mini will likely inherit the same performance setup. The Dimensity 9400, manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process and featuring a full-core design, boasts nearly 20% improvement in ray tracing performance, around 40% enhancement in NPU computing power, over 30% increase in CPU single-core performance, and a 25% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor. Industry insiders reveal that this chip can handle complex tasks, run large applications and games more efficiently, and enhance overall smartphone performance while extending battery life, offering users an improved control and real-time AI experience.
In terms of battery life, the standard OPPO Find X8 comes equipped with a 5630mAh Iceberg battery, while the Pro version houses a 5910mAh Iceberg battery. Both support 50W wireless flash charging and reverse charging. The Find X8 mini is expected to have a battery capacity closer to the Pro, offering a similar battery life, and potentially support 100W wired fast charging and wireless fast charging.
Other features like the full-focal length Dolby Vision video recording, solid-state quick-start key, One-Touch Transfer, ShanHai Communication, no-network communication, and satellite communication, supported on the OPPO Find X8 and X8 Pro, could also be integrated into the Find X8 mini.
It's worth noting that flagship phones released in October this year saw price increases across the board. The OPPO Find X8 starts at 4199 yuan, while the Find X8 Pro starts at 5299 yuan. Considering that compact flagships like the Xiaomi 15 and vivo X200 Promini already exceed 4000 yuan, the OPPO Find X8 mini is unlikely to be priced lower than this range.
Currently, at least two brands are scheduled to release flagship compact phones before the end of the year, and more manufacturers are expected to adopt this approach in the coming year. Apart from new phones, Redmi brand general manager Wang Teng recently revealed that small-sized, high-performance tablet devices are also on their way. Rumors suggest this compact tablet will feature an 8.7-inch 90Hz display, MediaTek Dimensity processor, 6650mAh battery with 18W charging, a 5MP front camera, an 8MP single rear camera, and retain a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device is expected to be lightweight and portable, making it appealing to gaming users.
Compact electronic devices are returning to the forefront, and if you're tired of large screens and prioritize portability, then these upcoming products are worth keeping an eye on.
