On June 12th, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that he is excited about the potential of technologies such as Apple's first hybrid reality headphone, VisionPro, to bring people a more immersive computing experience.
Pichai added that although he has not personally experienced this $3499 device, Google "always believes that computing will surpass black rectangles," referring to smartphones today.
Pichai made the above remarks in a recent interview with Bloomberg. In the interview, he was asked about a series of topics such as artificial intelligence and the recent downturn in Silicon Valley.
When it comes to Google's layoffs, Pichai said that the company will continue to strive to improve efficiency. In January of this year, Google laid off 12000 employees, and for outsourcing companies that employ a large number of contract workers, they have also reduced business transactions.
In the interview, he was also asked if Google needs to change its strategy for publishing new research results after OpenAI uses certain technologies researched by Google and becomes a competitive threat. Previously, there were reports that as Google integrates artificial intelligence into its products, internal leaders are reconsidering how many cutting-edge artificial intelligence studies to publish in academic journals.
Pichai stated that he expects Google to continue actively publishing research results in the field of artificial intelligence.
Google has ventured into the fields of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) computing multiple times, but with mixed success and failure. As early as 2014, the company released a VR head display made of cardboard, into which smartphones can be placed as display screens. This cardboard display aims to provide a low-cost device for new VR users to expand the potential market for immersive applications.
Although Google has released more VR headsets, it has basically abandoned this market and instead focused on the AR experience in its applications, such as Google Lens, which allows users to search using photos taken by cameras.
Google has also launched Google Glass, a more expensive AR glasses mocked as ugly and invasive, with a built-in camera that can capture the surrounding environment. After focusing on the enterprise market in the past few years, Google recently announced that it will completely stop selling this device.
It is reported that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, attacked Apple's VisionPro at a company wide meeting last week, saying it was too expensive and inconsistent with Meta's VR vision. Of course, Meta is a manufacturer of Quest series head displays and a market leader in this field.
In the interview, Pichai was also asked about the comments of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella once stated that Microsoft's efforts to enter the field of artificial intelligence have prompted Google to "dance", indicating that Google is facing challenges in maintaining flexibility. When asked if Pichai thought these comments were fair, he basically avoided the question and replied with a wry smile, "I think he said it to make you ask me this question
